Many people live with the ongoing pain and disruption of chronic migraine, often cycling through multiple treatments in search of relief. While medications such as NSAIDs and triptans can help reduce acute migraine pain, therapeutic Botox has become a highly effective preventative option, consistently showing superior results in reducing the frequency of migraine attacks before they start.
If you experience migraines chronically and haven’t found success with other medical therapies, Botox for chronic migraines may be a meaningful next step in your treatment journey.
Therapeutic Botox for chronic migraine is administered using the PREEMPT protocol, targeting sites across the forehead, temples, back of the head, and shoulders. Developed in 1989, this evidence based protocol has remained an effective, well studied treatment for reducing migraine frequency. The protocol uses between 155-195 units of botox.
You can expect to notice the benefits of Botox approximately two weeks after your procedure. We check in with you around this time to ensure everything is progressing well and to address any concerns.
Most patients notice meaningful improvement after their first treatment; however, the PREEMPT protocol recommends at least three treatment cycles for maximum benefit.
Therapeutic effects typically lasts around 3 months however this is patient dependant.
Temporary side effects such as mild bruising, redness, or tenderness at the injection sites can occur. Some patients also experience a brief, headache‑like sensation in the days following treatment.
Many private insurance plans may cover all or part of the cost of Botox treatment. Please bring your insurance information to your appointment (Note: a fee applies for completing insurance forms).
Although our clinic can provide Therapeutic Botox, we strongly recommend obtaining the medication from your local pharmacy. A prescription will be issued to you before your injection appointment.
*Please note that an injection fee applies, as this service is not covered by MSP.
